why don't you use bots to fight bots. its not hard to make one or buy one.

The text posts are all different in slight ways, so it wouldn't be too easy to make a bot that exclusively vets out the spam.

you could just banned every other language besides english and that should work well. after all the current bot is just korea bots not english bots.

Because then we'd have to ban you 248638576672243713.png

We have another section where people can post in other languages. Barring off foreign symbols wouldn't be fair at all to those people.

Not to mention the possible backlash at Nexon for just auto banning everyone who didn't speak the magic language, that could very well be interpreted as racism.

    Good lord, no chill!!

Though, we should use more captcha's!!! Those will slow down some bots, right? Make them tricky for bots but easy for normal people?

Captcha never work, people have found ways around it and the reason companies even use captcha is because it is a great way to make people feel like they did something.

There will always be a way around anything. Just need one to filter most of the minnows out.

The captcha work around isn't exactly new or hard to create, from my understanding. Seeing as these guys won't stop making accounts here and consistently make a hundred threads a session, I don't think simple captcha will stop them: they're too dedicated.
On top of that, does Vanilla Forums even support captcha integration?

Looks like there are only a couple options with this forum. They can set it to basic which will have the captcha, but users will be able to immediately post - it might deter bots. The second option is the approval method for new new users - which they are supposedly using. But it can become tedious going through and individually approving new users - sometimes the bots use seemingly normal user names and then we get burned with more spam.

There are also some plugins to help cut down on spam: https://blog.vanillaforums.com/help/stop-forum-spam/
But from what I read from other hosts it doesn't always work. Definitely requires some vigilance and tweaking.

considering Vanilla forms have "Akismet SPAM blocking." corporate level for 599/month, i can amuse that they are using the open source because nexon.

Yeah that was my big concern of mine that they are using the open source version. I'm going to change the title of this thread. Because the mods are doing everything they can but they are limited by something it appears. This happens EVERY night and I am starting to wonder how secure the forums are.

Well for one thing, we know that the site isn't https, so there's no security up front at all.

Just as a side note, but ya'll should probably start cropping out your chain quotes. They nuked threads at the start of these forums for GIANT quotes like that and I'd hate to see stuff pruned here.
(It's also a massive pain for me to get to your actual posts and read them)

I mean, https probably wouldn't stop the spam invasion but you do have a point.

The "paid" version and the open source are exactly the same, code-wise.
What the paid version provides is mostly support, hosting, and a couple of proprietary plugins.

Nothing stops Nexon from installing the akismet plugin (maintained by the Vanilla devs).
Then they'd only need to pay the akismet fee (around $5 ~ $50 per month).

Tho, at the moment, considering most spams contains similar korean words, a simple blacklist should be enough to block the bots.
