We’d all likely would have completely abandoned our dead server characters in a couple years had the merge not happened.
I never moved to a different server but after 2017 Tarlach really turned into a ghost town and I started playing Elder Scrolls Online a lot more than Mabinogi. I would only log on for new story content, do minimal effort for event rewards, and that was it. There was no one to talk to or run things with. Now that we're actually on an active server, I can rebuild my guild and make new friends again. There may not be a lot of actual new players, but there's people I've never met before and a lot of people that have never met me.
So I agree that a lot of people would have completely abandoned dead servers. My guild and I did it. A few guildies moved to Alexina, a few others just quit gaming, a few others started playing Warframe, Final Fantasy, etc. other games instead. There's no point to playing a MMO game if there aren't other people to interact with. I prefer having the market issues we have now rather than have no one around to do things with.
I also had plans to move the bulk of what was left of my guild over to Peria Chronicles when that gets released because that was the only game the majority of us could agree that we all wanted to play together. But now that there's actually new people to meet, we can keep Mabinogi as our main game.
I would like to remind everyone to be nice to the support team when discussing your issues with them. They're dealing with a spaghetti code game that was made in 2005, and the original developers of the game aren't on the staff anymore. You should definitely make tickets about your issues, but remember that the issue isn't the fault of the person responding to your ticket. They have feelings too, they're not robots. I was in live chat support this morning for a name change issues of my own and everything got resolved quickly and the GMs are very nice and are trying their best to make this work.
Corporation and its Employees don't deserve sympathy for this lmfao? It's not cute to get accustomed to terrible customer service like this
The people working on this game are trying their best. If you wouldn't yell at a Wallmart cashier for something wrong with your purchases, you shouldn't do that anywhere. The people working at the corporation are not responsible for every wrong thing the corporation does. Also, when you're kind and patient to the customer support they will prioritize you over the people that are being rude. That's true for anywhere.

Don't only check the cash shop inventory, but also check the auction board, make sure you retrieve all your purchases and cancel anything you have on sale. Also you have to check the housing channel market's bank lady and if you have any items to retrieve from a previous house ownership you need to get all of those out of that inventory. Normally after owning a house on the housing channel the game puts a check in your "retrieve items" window that pays you back some of the money you spent on bidding on the house in the first place.
I had the cash shop issue and figured out that it was actually the housing channel inv that was stopping me from getting a name change. Fixed that and my request went through just fine. So make sure you don't have anything like that on your character.
Also, everyone needs to leave their guilds, families, divorce their spouses, and cancel applications to guilds as well, which you can do through the Mabi website. Click on community -> guilds -> guild profile -> find your character's name and push "cancel application"
