What even is the Shadow Realm?

No, seriously. What is it? How did it come to be? Why is it here? What caused it to be here?

We know about the Caliburn, chase rumors about Irinid, and deal with Parthelonian zombies who come literally out of left field because they want the Caliburn and they're just here now... But what about the Shadow Realm itself? The thing the Kingdom of Whateversville put together a task force of alchemists and scholars to investigate? The driving force of the story?

I'm doing the (translated with a lead pipe) main questline that involves frequently going to the Shadow Realm, and I have no bloody clue what or why it is! Are we missing something lost in translation?

I know this is like 17 Game Directors ago but damn. I'm trying my best to get invested and just finding frustration sometimes.

    I asked more or less the same questions about 6-7 years ago and the few that did comment had no answers, you are told everything from a present perspective and are told next to nothing about the Shadow Realm's past or future.
