Closed Mabinogi genuinely effects my mental health.
I would like to say after struggling to play this game for years on end, this game has done nothing but negatively effect my mental health.
From how the community treats each other, to the gachapon and it's rates. I have always felt ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE playing this game.
I'm asking for help on either A.How to enjoy this game again; or B. What to do instead
I also would like to know how Mabinogi makes you feel about yourself.

If you don't have a job then don't engage in gachapon. If you do then go to town. The richest folks in this game buy tons of them for the items they want and sell the rest to boost their gold piles. This is a kind of make lemonade with lemons idea. I bought one gachapon once, by accident. It was a dye gachapon. I misread it and thought I was buying the color I wanted. When I realized it was a gachapon and, surprise, I didn't get the color I wanted . . . well . . . I just took it as life giving me one of those learn-the-hard-way lessons.
What made me the most angry when playing the game was how difficult I used to find it. This was a result of two things: the original combat system was tricky and I didn't know how to fight. When the fighter talent came in they overhauled the combat system and made it MUCH more manageable, and someone taught me how to fight. Now, I no longer scream at my monitor at the top of my lungs until my dad screams at ME at the top of HIS lungs. BTW if you want to know what the old combat system was like then log onto one of your pets and go fight things.
As for your A and B requests. We are all unique so what one may suggest may not do the job. In my own case, for the last five years or so, I've logged in but I barely play. What I do though is play events, only if I like the prizes, but mostly I like to record the Tara jousting game finals and report on them on my YouTube channel. I report on the matches and critique the play. I believe it has helped to maintain a jousting community on Alexina and is helping to build one on Nao. In both cases it has improved the games of both communities. It feels good to have made a difference in some small way.
In the previous paragraph may be an answer for you: join a community. Jousting is one, fashionista is one, specialised guilds, or what have you. If you are shy or not very sociable, well, in this world those are disadvantages. Maybe Mabinogi can help you to overcome that. Since you'd be doing so through a computer avatar then it's relatively safe and pressure free.
How I've enjoyed the game for years is don't rush and don't force yourself.
That will limit the money you spend and the stress of trying to catch up with others.
Spend when you want to spend, and properly plan on when and how you want to progress in the game.
Like with all goals in life, make proper feasible and accountable goals.
Don't calculate every lost opportunity (like items from events or sales or expired items).
In game, try not to get caught up with being forced to slave yourself over gold. There will be opportunities to increase your game income, take it slowly.
People always talk about reaching endgame, but I personally believe that is the wrong approach to playing any open sandbox game.
I never understood this mentality and will never understand it. Perhaps it's herd mentality? Someone reached endgame, I want to reach endgame too. I think that is what causes playing games like these to be stressful.
As far as that though, what I mostly do for fun is spam my capped Wings of Haste and master dance of death in public. . .A LOT. Who doesn't wanna show off by going super fast for almost FIVE MINUTES STRAIGHT like a mosquito?
And also take breaks. There's always that one person who wants nothing to do with mabinogi and doesn't actually play, but still forces themselves to be present for literally every event that ever happens while aloofly avoiding everyone they used to hang out with. That can have some sad endings. Never proverbially sleep with mabi because you'll lose track of time and give yourself sensory burnout. Once that happens, you'll never like mabinogi like you used to
For example, I used to get extremely frustrated at losing in chess-matches (particularly if I was trying to obtain more «Elo» points), but to over-come that, I now just try to approach every chess-match as a study session. If I happen to lose, then I go back and study the move-list, studying it until I figure out where I may have made any mistakes, and if I can use the information to improve my knowledge, then it was a «success» as far as further improving & developing my skill (another thing I have learned to do as a result is to NOT accept matches from anybody whose Elo-Rating is less than 150 points below my own [unless I end up with my Elo exceeding 2100 then I might allow for up to a -250 point variation for opponents below my Elo]). I don't know what you are doing with your time on Mabi, and you are not being very specific about what is frustrating you, but you might try to «change the in-world game» you're playing to something you enjoy doing (for example, if you're entrepreneur-minded, you could try playing a «see how much revenue you can generate each day from Auction-House sales» game within the Mabi-World [this is easiest done with fast-selling wares such as Stacks of Holy Waters]). I originally enjoyed the «freedom» it offered, from travel-convenience, not being restricted-for-life to any particular «class» role/skill-set, etc., but I suppose I have more of a rather «neutral» stance nowadays, for a variety of reasons. For what it's worth, the Mabi-Client used to be full of far more glitches, crashes, even the spawn-server(s) used to go belly-up a lot, and there was also once a «duping incident» resulting in a massive roll-back on a past day (resulting in the loss of a significant percentage of the player-base), and so the frustration-levels back then would have potentially been far more than the «easy mode» things have become now (although there is far less «active» population than before so maybe trying to «find a group» may have become more challenging now).
Special thanks to Habimaru for sharing his experience with us!
I remember all of the stuff that happened especially the few times of "indefinite maintenance" along with the full deletion of the old forums to hide what happened in 2012.
We all have our burn out moments in this game. Sometimes what I will do is still login for events but go into offline mode so I can netflix and chill. The rat race will always be there when I decide to jump in again.
If the break doesn't help, move on and try something new.
Communities are always rough, you just have to search for the right people in said community to hang with, make your own group of friends, once you're happy. Ignore the community.
That's what I did at least. Worked well, until everyone quit.. I guess then you just rinse repeat the process, something I couldn't bother doing. :^)
Gacha, I can't give advice on. I have never spent money on them, unless I had leftover NX from buying Pon for my Style Tab. They really aren't worth it, but that's just my opinion. I did fine without them quite honestly.
Do you play?
Yes, but it isn't affecting me the same way OP is.
True friends keep in touch in multiple ways anyways. Let's say If one really reallly wished for me to spend time with them on this game specifically: I'd simply reinstall it if it were uninstalled. And it would be fine. Not a job ; not coworkers with a time constraint ; No damages for lost time on the job. Just me reinstalling the game to spend time with someone who probably really wants it. Just take the break
Have a nice rest and hope that you do find some time to return in the future.
I got you, fam. Listen up and listen close, ok?
Aight. So. what I do to maintain my sanity in this game when dealing with other players is...!
If I did, it wouldn't be this one! Ha-ha!
Ah, yes. I have my fair share of frustrations, no lie.
But, I don't wrist myself and abuse myself if I - say - fail to pass the first phase of kraken elite.
disclaimer
i can only tell you how i personally enjoy the game. and it's up to you if you wanna try what i do or something similar or even inspire you to try something new in the game.
what i love about mabi
i love how relaxing the game can be, i do a lot of life skills and i help contribute to a lot of players who need woodboards and i love cooking in mabi
i love being an archer elf not because its strong (cuz its not) but because i can pretend to be a D&D style elfy in anime style.
identify your triggers
gachapons prey on me as well, i'm bipolar and suffer from impulse control sometimes so i made it a rule to not play mabinogi when im depressed.
my perspective on making friends
as for toxic communities go. i feel ya there, back then when the internet was still a baby, anyone could make friends with randos and people were nice.
however now a days people lost the concept of real world consequences and are highly toxic. if they get banned they make a new account. and other examples too.
my advice about making friends on mabi is gonna be.. be cautious around randos but try to bring real world friends or people you trust more from outside the game in with you for less drama.
in summary and how i feel about it
try and bring friends into mabi as it makes less drama and more real world accountability
gambling in mabi preys on those suffering from mental health. nexon isn't held accountable for players going broke and they shouldn't be. thats the users to choose to spend money
this game is super fun!
but i dont have enough real world friends to bring into the game to go raiding so i take long breaks. from time to time. play other games and try to focus on something else ♥
I'm going to let you know that I also find it troublesome that there are people who actually would rather say it's your fault bad things happened to you as a result of something someone else did in response to something you said or did.
I'm no longer of the type that thinks anyone "deserves" bad things to happen to them as an act of moral retribution, especially just because they said something someone didn't like.
I don't think anyone throwing stones at you has a clean slate, either. I don't get why people put themselves on such a high moral pedestal. You may indeed have a pretty bad past. You may have hurt some people in your own indignant quest for moral retribution as well. But, I don't see how this justifies anyone doing the exact same thing as you, but against you. It's only okay if they do it, I suppose, as evil people don't ever think they're being evil. There's always some reason why they're special.
So, my advice to you -- and to everyone -- in addition to the above post is to stop seeking retribution. It's not your place to punish people for things they do, either. Don't just sit back and do nothing; don't start a morality war, either. This is a video game. This isn't a grounds to try and shape a new society separate from reality and nor is it a place to try and impose one's own moral philosophy on others. Just play the game and focus on the game and your conflicts will decline, I promise.
My guild and I used to spend a lot of time spamming alby advanced hard mode with an 8 person party. The dungeon revamp made speed runs of that impossible now unless it's 4 super elite giga pros going in there. The amount of time spent in there is no longer worth the reward, because they increased the effort needed, and difficulty of the dungeon but they didn't increase the drop rates of any of the celtic mats. So it's no longer worth it to try and grind those to sell mats (also the weps from techs are better and lowered the market value of celtic weps). So, this is no longer a go-to for guild runs.
However, girg raids and tech missions are very worthwhile. If you get a max roll on weapons made from girgashiy mats it can rival the divine weps. And weps from the tech missions are the new end game (and the drop rates of those mats aren't as insane as phantasm drops). Focusing on this newer content makes the game fun, rewarding, and actually worth my time. Also, increasing crusader level and techniques is rewarding in and of itself, even if you don't get good drops from your run.
So, my biggest issue of losing interest in Mabi was when I was staying at mid-game and neglecting my advancement. Once I trained enough to not be a squishy mess in newer content, Mabi was fun again. So if you really want to regain interest in Mabi, I would suggest getting caught up on the generations and ranking the talents for the stat boosts, so that you can participate in all the new content. The Winter and Summer Master Plan events are a great time to get caught up on leveling your skills.
If you hate all the new content and just really miss old school Mabi, then I don't know what to tell you. This is just what worked for me. As for the community concerns, find a guild or group of friends that you enjoy spending time with. Stay out of the market channel if you want to be away from toxic people.
On gacha, the secret strategy on spending money for online games is to know your finances. Know what you can afford to spend on miscellaneous wants each month. If you don't have any sort of budget/spending quota, it's best not to make any purchases at all.
Don't fall into the mental trap of "I really want this item, so I'll keep spending or just one more time" to gamble at the low chance of potentially getting the item. For those who live in places that have lotteries, and have either legally participated in lotteries or know someone close that have, gachas are pretty similar. Don't go buying expecting to win anything (except that for gachas, you will get something, even though it's not the top prize). Treat it as, I got a little to spare, I'm just going to try my luck and that's it.
