And which server is more active? I'm planning to start anew. I tried the game like waaay back in generation 2. Then life happened and I had to stop playing. Always wanted to come back. So many new stuff. I'm abit confused on where to start? Any suggestions? Is their a subscription fee to do story-line and to keep your transformation state still? :(

Human if you want to dabble in everything, giant or elf if you want to be good at something. Mabinogi is free2play but pay2win.

You can have multiple characters too so there's that. Elf runs the fastest which usually attracts people to that. Plus good at archery, albeit one of the more boring skillsets (in general). Giants are close combat specialists that can't use archery. Humans can use just about everything but fall a bit short in the areas where giants or elves specialize and are the slowest race. All in all, it doesn't really matter what you pick since there are enough skills to keep you busy for years.

Spin the wheel for choosing server instead of asking people which server.
    It is very obvious....

Humans can do everything, and Elves CANNOT use Lances, like Giants CANNOT use Bows/Arrows. As for server, many suggest using your many character cards which you should have gotten and make a character per server so you can experience the population yourself. Just make sure to ally yourself with the Giants/Elves in order to get two more character cards (Giant/Elf respectively).

This suggestion really bugs me when people say that. I mean, the player loses A LOT of free bank space this way.

Greta is right, you would forego bank space with that suggestion to try each server. However, it bugs me when the forums have bicker wars about which server they think OP should join, so I feel it better to leave it to OP.

Personally, I'm on Ruairi server, which is one of the three smaller servers, including Tarlach and Mari, while the largest populated one is Alexina.

Human is, as other have said, the Jack-of-All-Stats, All-Around race. Elves are good for Archery, sure, but are just built really well for ranged combat in general (Archery, Magic, and Alchemy especially). Giants are your melee powerhouses, so they're great with Close Combat, Lance Combat, Martial Arts (Fighter), and Ninja skills.

My advice on starting out is that you should either pick Close Combat, Fighter, or Magic as a starting talent. Magic is a little more AP intensive than the other two, but is very rewarding and Thunderbolt is a really good spell for taking enemies out at a distance because of its short charge time. Ice Bolt is also very good for taking out weaker enemies in succession due to the fact that a full charge of 5 gives you 5 individual shots, sort of like a magical pistol. If you choose anything but Close Combat, though, make sure you still devote some time to training your basic skills like Defense, Smash, Counter, and especially Windmill...Oh, Windmill...The grind is real...

Speaking of grinds, though, starting with Carpentry or Tailoring is actually a good way to get lots of Stamina early on from leveling the Production Mastery skill. Both talents provide double training experience for Production Mastery, you'll level it easily just gathering materials, it doesn't increase your Combat Power (which is key for training Windmill...aka. Mabi's Magicarp), and leveling Production Mastery very early on will unlock multiple AP-bearing talent titles, allowing you to stockpile AP for later training. In addition, both talents have their own individual early-game advantages. With the Carpentry talent, you can level the Carpentry skill more quickly--giving you a bit of extra strength--and with just a Handicraft Kit, a Gathering Axe, and enough inventory space to hold 10 stacks of 10 firewood at a time, you can quickly raise your Handicraft skill and make some decent early-game cash by cranking out rolling pins and selling them to NPC shops. With Tailoring, you can make a piece of clothing with higher durability, protection, and defense than the NPC store version, which makes a pretty good piece of starter armor with a Liner Attachment 2 and two Liner Attachment 3 upgrades slapped on it (If you make something like Mongo's Traveler Suit [Male or Female version], you get not only the good early-game defensive stats but also super-cheap rates for 100% repairs, so you can hang onto it for a while while you save up for better protective gear). Getting the materials for the clothes can take the better part of a week thanks to the RNG-based nature of cloth production, but if you don't mind spending a bit of time on prepping your character before diving head-first into adventuring, it's actually quite worth it. Basically, picking either Carpentry or Tailoring depends on your level of patience and which talent's advantages you prefer (quick cash or cheap gear).

The storyline and transformations are all free now. They even give new players a bunch of free character cards, three free mounts from doing Lorna's newbie quests, and you can earn a free Pegasus from doing all 10 episodes of "The Saga: Iria" for the first time. Events also happen fairly regularly that offer free pets as prizes, like the recent homestead event that gave out a special sparkly pink Pegasus as one of the prizes.

Finally, as far as what server to pick, it all depends on how social you want to be. If you mostly want to chill by yourself and solo grind and aren't big on random conversation while you're getting your adventure on, pick one of the quieter servers like Tarlach or Ruari and hang out on the less populated channels. If you're more of a social butterfly and can't stand to play an MMO without a lot of social interaction, you'll want to hang out on Alexina. It all depends on how social you want to be and how easily you get lonely.

P.S.: If you plan on doing a lot of solo adventuring, make sure to buy yourself a lute and a microphone, equip the lute and do the quests that allow you to learn Enduring Melody, Battlefield Overture, and Lullaby, then equip the microphone and get Song up to rank 5. Song at rank 5 allows you to use music skills with or without an instrument or microphone, which frees up an equipment slot and allows you to carry a melee weapon and a ranged weapon while still being able to buff yourself or put enemies to sleep with incredible ease.

Hello, and welcome back to Mabinogi after all these years. A lot has changed over time, from overhauls of the entire stat system to storylines, transformations, and extra inventory becoming free. Overall, it is much easier to grow a character than in the past.

The first thing you need to do is pick a race.
Humans can use everything and are the best pretty average, being a slow jack of all trades race.
Elves can run fast, and are known for regretting everything being good at ranged combat, like archery and magic.
Giants are the masters of having no dex melee combat, aided by unique melee skills and the only heavy shield.

After you have picked a race, it is time to consider what server to play on.
Keep in mind there is no right choice. Every server has a different population and general community.
Alexenia has the largest population, but also the most chaotic, unpredictable community. A bit of everything. The Youngest server.
Mari is full of sparkles and people who apparently really, really love fashion. The pretty server.
Ruari is a ghost town a fine server with very respectable people. I actually wish I heard more from them.
Tarlach is a weird server, where the first town of Tir is crowded, Dunby is empty, and Belvast is flooded. A surprisingly active server.

I'm from Tarlach myself. Just remember to never let people choose a server for you, as they are all different in a number of ways.

Good luck, have fun, and take your time.

Heeeeeeey you joined around the same time as me. Wb~

As people have said, storyline is now free. Trans is free. What was once considered extra invo service is now free. Talking to spirit wep is now free. You can actually switch out your spirit weapon into a new weapon (I think this requires a Nexon shop bought item though) so you could switch from a sword to a different sword or even a different weapon type like blunt. Since you've been gone, there have been additional skillsets added such as Alchemy, Gunslinger, Ninja, etc. Music skill has had new skills added that will help in combat/life production. Also, you might notice that there are new life skills such as egg gathering (very useful if you do life skills, as you can rank it up and speed up gathering).

I would recommend checking out the new pets that do additional cool stuff, like the Warp Imp, if you're interested in pets. Speaking of, new characters get a free thoroughbred horse mount and an Eagle mount. Also, make sure you complete ALL The beginner quests (and don't choose to skip any of them), as I think that's a requirement to get the broomstick pet (which actually has invo, unlike the other pets). Additionally, I think that you need a new account and you can get a bunch of free character cards?

Wiki is still around. We now have skill seals, which you can get a variety of ways (events, seal shop in-game) that can help train skills. Skill pots also help. We just got a new feature that implemented the ability to choose 100% success repairs (except Ferghus and a few others can't do this); costs extra gold but guarantees that your item will not lose dura. That's pretty cool~

I think that's the short version. Btw, we're all the way up to G20 :D

Never go elf if you're new.

Giants might be good with the new buffs coming out.

Go human for the easiest time. You'll get to endgame in no time with final hit and some cheap final hit reforges. Use bash when final hit is on cooldown. Start out with dual wielding beam swords then upgrade to CRKs. Level up all the str combat skills. Then all that's left is raising str life skills.
Magic is okay too for a beginner but it's a pain to get all the skills.

Go humans if you don't want to limit your options. You can decide after if you really want the niche things giants or elves offer.

Alexina is the most active and most similar to the population you played with back in G2. If you go to any other server it will be a ghost town compared to your experience in G2. I quit in G9 ish and returned around the time Saga I was being released and played on Tarlach originally. I switched to Alexina because the server was too small compared to what I was used to.

Choose human (you can use all skill)
Play on alexina (most populated server)
Rank warrior talent to master (so your generation quest would be a breeze)
Rank as many skill as you want before 1k total (reset your skill at duncan so you have enough ap to train the next one. Repeat)
Don't buy gacha (99% of the item is junk)
Do not fall for mabi girl (90% of them are dudes)

    Mabinogi in a nutshell.

For heavens sake, let the OP pick a server. Alexina and Ruairi people need to stop trying too hard to take everyone. You don't see the Mari or Tarlach servers needing to do that.
